Getting your learner licence in ACT

The requirements to obtain a learner driver licence are

1. Must be 15 years and nine months of age
2. Must complete a Pre-learner Licence course, and computerised knowledge test.
3. Visit Access Canberra Service Centre to get your learner licence and log book.

Getting your provisional licence in ACT

ACT learner licence holders

ACT Learner licence holders may choose to obtain their provisional licence by completing
either:
1. the Competency Based Training and Assessment(Log Book method) with an ACT
Accredited Driving Instructor who will train and assess learners or
2. by booking a practical driving assessment with a Government Licence Examiner
who will only assess learners.
The GLS(Graduated licence scheme) requirements to obtain a provisional driver licence 
are:

For under 25 years of age at the time of getting your ACT learner licence:

1. hold an active* ACT Learner Driver Licence for a minimum of 12 months
2. complete 100 supervised driving hours including 10 at night
3. Complete the online Hazard Perception Test** (can only be completed after 3
months of holding an active ACT learner licence, exception for overseas licence
holders)
4. complete the one-off practical driving assessment with a Government Assessor or
the Competency Based Training and Assessment(log book method)

For over 25 years of age at the time of getting your ACT learner licence:

5. hold an active* ACT Learner Driver Licence for a minimum of 6 months
6. complete 50 supervised driving hours including 5 at night
7. Complete the online Hazard Perception Test** (can only be completed after 3
months of holding an active ACT learner licence, exception for overseas licence
holders)
8. complete the one-off practical driving assessment with a Government Assessor or
the Competency Based Training and Assessment(log book method)

Learners can also get credited hours in the log book by:

1. Learning with an Accredited Driving Instructor gives a credit of 1hr=3hr
For the first 10 hours with ADI are credited as 30hrs in the logbook.

2. Completing the courses mentioned below with the approved organisations
a) Safer driver gives a credit of 20hrs
b) Vulnerable road user course gives a credit of 10 hrs

Overseas licence holders with a Full licence

1. have successfully completed a Pre-learner Licence course, including
passing the ACT Road Rules based computerised knowledge test.

2. book a practical driving assessment with a Government Licence Examiner
a) Pass drivers will get a full licence. HPT is not required for first attempt.
b) Fail drivers will be issued with a learner licence and logbook and must comply with the
condition of learner licence except for the waiting period of 6 months or 12 months.

Interstate learner licence holders

1. must obtain a licence history from the interstate jurisdiction and present it to Access Canberra
within 7days from the date of issue to book the one off government driving test.
a) Pass will get a P licence. HPT is not required for first attempt.
b) Fail will have to complete a Pre-learner Licence course, and computerised
knowledge test and apply for the ACT learner licence.
Hours already logged in the NSW log book will be counted towards the required hours in
the Act log book. All other conditions of getting P must be met.
